Soca
The Sound of Caribbean Carnival
Soca (a blend of “soul” and “calypso”) is an energetic and rhythmic music genre from Trinidad and Tobago, developed in the 1970s. It is heavily associated with Carnival celebrations across the Caribbean and is known for its infectious beats and danceable grooves.
🎶 Soca was pioneered by Lord Shorty (Garfield Blackman), a Trinidadian musician who wanted to modernize calypso by adding more rhythm and bass. He experimented with blending Indian chutney music, African rhythms, and American funk, creating a faster, more percussion-driven style.
🌍 Over time, Soca evolved into different subgenres and spread beyond Trinidad, becoming a dominant Caribbean party music played at carnivals worldwide.
🌍 Soca has expanded beyond the Caribbean, influencing Afrobeats, EDM, Dancehall, and Latin music. It’s now a major part of Carnivals worldwide, from Trinidad & Tobago Carnival to Notting Hill Carnival (UK) and Caribana (Canada).
💃 Whether you’re at a carnival or just want to “wuk up” (dance) and have a time, Soca brings the ultimate party vibes!
