Demeter was the Olympian goddess of agriculture, grain and bread who sustained mankind with the earth’s rich bounty.

As the Goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest she is often depicted as a mature woman, often wearing a crown and bearing sheafs of wheat or a cornucopia (horn of plenty), and a torch. Demeter also appeared as a goddess of health, birth, and marriage and bore several important titles such as the divinity of the underworld where she was worshipped. Demeter is the sister of Zeus, and the mother of Persephone. In Greek Mythology, she presided over the foremost of the Mystery Cults which promised its initiates the path to a blessed afterlife in the realm of Elysium these secretive religious cults that celebrated the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth through the story of Demeter and Persephone.
