The Sound of Barbados

Spouge is a genre of Caribbean music that originated in Barbados during the 1960s. It is considered Barbados’ first indigenous popular music style, blending elements of ska, calypso, reggae, and American R&B into a unique and energetic sound.

Spouge was pioneered by Jackie Opel, a Barbadian singer and musician who was heavily influenced by Jamaican ska and American soul music. Opel created Spouge as a fusion of Caribbean and international styles, making it distinct from the music of neighboring islands.

The genre peaked in popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s, becoming the dominant form of dance music in Barbados. While its mainstream presence declined over time, Spouge remains a proud part of Bajan cultural heritage.

Although Spouge was later overshadowed by reggae and soca, it remains an important cultural symbol of Barbados. The genre influenced modern Bajan music and continues to be celebrated at cultural events and festivals.
